TUBITAK grants 200 thousand TL for dyslexia mobile app

Esra Ablak and Deniz Öztürk, graduates of Department of Psychology, Izmir University of Economics (IUE), qualified for a 200 thousand TL grant from TUBITAK for their mobile application to help treat dyslexia (a learning disorder). Ablak and Öztürk, who are in the midst of building a business in order to carry their mobile application, “DysApp”, into effect, said, “This mobile app, which we had been working on for almost six months, offers scientific training for the treatment of dyslexia in the form of a game. The app is very user friendly.”

IUE student’s short film receives international awards

Ecem Çelik, a senior at Department of Cinema and Digital Media, Faculty of Communication, Izmir University of Economics (IUE), received awards at festivals held in India and Slovakia for her short film about a story of a little girl escaping the war in her homeland, Syria and taking refuge in Turkey. Çelik’s short film, “Ukde”, which addresses the migration reality experienced by Turkey and rest of the world, was selected the “Debut Filmmaker” at the White Unicorn International Film Festival in India, and “Best Short Film Drama”, “Best Short Student Film”, “Best Trailer”, “Best Director Short Film” category from Kosice International Monthly Film Festival in Slovakia. Çelik’s film was also selected in 14 national and international festivals.

Kubilay Yılmazer, graduate of Izmir University of Economics (IUE), Mert Güvel, IUE third year student, and Oğuz Gökkaya, student from Katip Çelebi University, are going global with a smart phone program that matches friends via artificial intelligence. Young entrepreneurs, who came in first place at the project contest held in Izmir, have been invited to the Entrepreneurship Fair that will be held in Estonia on 11-15 November. Stating that attending this fair, where hundreds of participants from 75 counties will be attending, was very important for them, the project team said, “There is no equivalence to this program which performs character analyses via artificial intelligence. Therefore, we believe that it will attract the attention of entrepreneurs.”

İnan Evin, who graduated from Department of Software Engineering, Izmir University of Economics (IUE) this year and ranked among the top 50 students at the competition held by UNITY, a cross-platform game engine and famous software company, got the attention of international universities. His success got him graduate education offers from IT University of Copenhagen, Denmark, University of Tampere, Finland and Aalto University, Finland. Evin made his choice in favor of Aalto University and decided to pursue master’s degree in game development. Evin, who is eligible for full scholarship, will study game technologies in Finland.

Esra and Melis Sarıhan sisters, graduates of Izmir University of Economics (IUE), who introduce the designers to the whole world via e-trade, have recently been awarded for their entrepreneurial success. The e-trade site called ‘baskasindarama.com’, founded by sisters Esra Sarıhan, graduate of IUE Department of Industrial Engineering, and Melis Sarıhan, graduate of IUE Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, qualified to receive the ‘Stevie Awards’, world’s most prestigious international business awards competition. The Sarıhan sisters’ company, which was founded in 2016, promoting their own designs as well as designs of other Turkish designers, was awarded the Bronze Stevie Award in the category of company of the year in small retail company.

Burakhan Sayın from Izmir, who wanted to be a lawyer since childhood, and got a chance to study at Faculty of Law, thanks to a transfer opportunity from Vocational School of Justice to Faculty of Law, turned that chance into a success. Sayın, who started his education at Vocational School of Justice, Izmir University of Economics (IUE) in 2013, took a transfer exam two years later and successfully transferred to, and graduated from Faculty of Law and received his diploma.

Melike Evtut, who recently graduated from Department of Business Management, Izmir University of Economics (IUE) with full scholarship, also qualified for a full scholarship granted by the Chinese Government for a limited number of students from Turkey. Evtut, who learned Chinese as a second foreign language throughout her 4-year study at IUE, got an opportunity to do her MBA at the Shanghai University of Finance and Economics. Evtut reported that she was very excited to go to China in September. “After I complete my MBA, I would like to work in a field that would help improve the cultural and commercial collaboration between China and Turkey,” said Evtut.
