Those, who were least affected by the coronavirus epidemic, were highly skilled university graduates with opportunities to work from home. Prof. Oğuz Esen, Lecturer, Department of Economics, Izmir University of Economics (IUE), who had been the guest of Pandemic Academy, held by IUE Faculty of Communication as part of Campus Izmir talks, stated that the university graduates kept both their health, their income and their jobs.
A special song is composed in order to lift our spirits during these days when the coronavirus cases started to decline, and to call attention to the “Stay at Home” orders pointed out by the experts all the time. Alaskar Abbasov, Music Consultant, Izmir University of Economics (IUE) and Aslıhan Doğu, Graduate of IUE Department of Psychology, prepared a song together called “Gelecek Bizim (The Future is Ours)” which is about overcoming coronavirus and getting back to normal life. The song composed by Abbasov and lyricized by Aslıhan Doğu, will be broadcast on social media platforms and the internet. Some of the lyrics of the song, which is originally written in English, are: “I know it is hard to find something to do at home. This shall pass if you stay at home. The sun shines on us despite everything.”
Izmir University of Economics (IUE) moved the Campus Izmir Chats to an online platform. The event was started 3 months ago in order to bring experts in different fields such as law, education, health, economics, together with students and graduates. The series of events will continue until May 27 with the participation of a different guest on Wednesdays via Blackboard Collaborate. The series, which address the impact of coronavirus on our lives in all aspects, and provide answers to the questions of the audience, will also be broadcasted live on IUE’s YouTube account. Prof. Coşkun Küçüközmen, Lecturer at IUE Department of International Trade and Finance, and Assoc. Prof. Alp Limoncuoğlu, Vice Dean of IUE Faculty of Law, were the first guests of the first “Online Seminar Series” titled event out of 8 events organized by IUE Graduate School.
Izmir University of Economics (IUE), which was established on 14 April 2001 as the first Foundation University of the Aegean Region, is celebrating its 19th year in the education sector. Mahmut Özgener, President of IUE Board of Trustees, pointed that they accomplished many important tasks under the guidance of wisdom, science, and technology in a very short time. “We became the kind of institution which generates ideas, creates values for our country and city in the past 19 years that are full of accomplishments. Our graduates, who are doing their own business or keeping managerial positions in over 50 countries, are our biggest source of pride. We will continue to be the pioneer of innovations with the youth who never disappoint us,” said President Özgener.”
A special software has been developed for 16 thousand 200 graduates of Izmir University of Economics (IUE) to allow them keep in touch, and pave the way for new business partnerships. Alumni, who subscribe to Pitch & Match, new program of IUE graduate Murat Aybars, will be able to share their business needs and experiences, organize social events, and get career support from each other. Only IUE alumni will be able to access the system.
Hilal Karakaş, a senior at Department of Fashion and Textile Design, Izmir University of Economics (IUE), came in second place at the Junioshow Baby and Kids Wear Young Designers Competition with her special collection she designed for babies aged 0-12 months. Karakaş, who ranked second at the competition co-organized by Bursa Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BTSO) and Baby and Kids Wear Industrialists and Businessmen's Association (BEKSIAD),and supported by the Ministry of Trade, qualified to receive 5 thousand TL award and a scholarship to study design abroad.
Esra Ablak and Deniz Öztürk, graduates of Department of Psychology, Izmir University of Economics (IUE), qualified for a 200 thousand TL grant from TUBITAK for their mobile application to help treat dyslexia (a learning disorder). Ablak and Öztürk, who are in the midst of building a business in order to carry their mobile application, “DysApp”, into effect, said, “This mobile app, which we had been working on for almost six months, offers scientific training for the treatment of dyslexia in the form of a game. The app is very user friendly.”

Ecem Çelik, a senior at Department of Cinema and Digital Media, Faculty of Communication, Izmir University of Economics (IUE), received awards at festivals held in India and Slovakia for her short film about a story of a little girl escaping the war in her homeland, Syria and taking refuge in Turkey. Çelik’s short film, “Ukde”, which addresses the migration reality experienced by Turkey and rest of the world, was selected the “Debut Filmmaker” at the White Unicorn International Film Festival in India, and “Best Short Film Drama”, “Best Short Student Film”, “Best Trailer”, “Best Director Short Film” category from Kosice International Monthly Film Festival in Slovakia. Çelik’s film was also selected in 14 national and international festivals.
Kerem Özerler, Mert Uzyıldırım, and Kutay Yorulmaz, graduates of Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design, Faculty of Arts and Design, Izmir University of Economics (IUE), qualified to exhibit their collection under the brand of “Wangan” at “London Design Festival 2019”.
