The ‘Mentorship Project’ (Peer Mentor) of Izmir University of Economics, which has been ongoing for 8 years to accelerate the adaptation process of young students who are new to the campus, was successfully implemented this year as well. Within the scope of the project, 197 mentors were selected from IEU students in the second, third, and fourth years. Peer mentors were paired with 2,700 mentees from different departments. The mentors, who are part of the project initiated by IEU for the first time in the Aegean Region, will assist their new fellow students throughout the semester, provide support in promoting the departments, and share information about campus facilities. The project, which has been ongoing since 2015, has reached a total of 14,700 students.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Şölen Kipöz from Izmir University of Economics (IUE) Department of Textile and Fashion Design and İpek Karatop, who graduated this year, won the first place in Turkey in the competition called ‘Design the Cycle’. The duo, who signed an exemplary academic-student work, achieved success with a collection of stylish trousers, skirts, vests, shirts and dress designs prepared for women by recycling idle men's shirts.
Senem Özdemir, who has been dreaming of becoming a pilot since childhood, graduated as the top student in the Department of Physics at Izmir University of Economics (IUE), which she started with the thought that she would never give up piloting even if she studied in another program. Özdemir, who loved physics as she studied and focused on research in this field, gave up on becoming a pilot and charted a completely different career path for herself, expanding to Europe with her achievements. Continuing her educational journey with a master's degree, Özdemir went to world-renowned laboratories in Italy and Switzerland and started to work in the field of ‘nuclear physics’. Stating that she aims to return to IUE as an academic one day, Özdemir said, “At my university, where I laid the foundations of my interest for physics, I want to work as an academic, contribute to science, and instill the magic of physics in young students.”
Selen Çabuk, Deniz Taplu and Ece Deniz Ergenç, graduates of Izmir University of Economics (IUE) Department of Sociology, took their achievements to the international arena and received acceptance from 3 different countries for their graduate education. Ezgi Kaya, who graduated from Izmir University of Economics (IUE) Department of Genetics and Bioengineering this year, was accepted to the world-famous Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, Germany. Kaya, who successfully passed the oral interview and written exam attended by thousands of students, will do her master's degree in ‘molecular and cellular biology’ in Germany, where she will stay for two years. Stating that by examining the structure of the cell, she aims to contribute to the studies on the diagnosis and treatment of genetically based diseases such as hemophilia, Down syndrome and cancer, Kaya said, “I have been interested in genetics since childhood and wanted to improve myself in this field. I am excited to further my university education in Germany and to do studies abroad.”
Mert Atanmış (23), who graduated from Izmir University of Economics (IUE) Department of Industrial Engineering with the first place last year, was entitled to receive the ‘GREAT’ scholarship awarded to only 200 students by the British government. Atanmış, who will do a master's degree in the field of ‘artificial intelligence and data analytics’ at University of Bradford, one of the well-established educational institutions of England, will have the opportunity to develop himself abroad and produce projects in the international arena. Stating that he aims to return to Turkey after his education in England and continue his career in the field of artificial intelligence, Atanmış said, “I want to serve my country in the best way and to accomplish exemplary projects in my field.”
Olive, which is one of the values unique to the Aegean and has been an indispensable element of tables for centuries as a source of healing and taste, has been a source of inspiration for designers. Melis Baloğlu and Elif Tekcan, who continue their careers as lecturers at Izmir University of Economics (IUE), from which they graduated, produced a bio-based material (vegan leather) from olive pulp called ‘PIRINA (pomace)’. The duo, who created a durable and environmentally friendly material that can be used especially in automotive and furniture upholstery, came first in the ‘Futuretex Istanbul’ competition organized by the Istanbul Textile and Raw Materials Exporters' Association (ITHIB), which prioritizes university-industry cooperation.
Esra-Melis Sarıhan sisters, graduates of Izmir University of Economics (IUE), developed an application called ‘Yedir’ that will bring home cooks and food lovers together with ‘one click’. People, who become a free member of the app, which can be used over the internet or by downloading it to their smartphones, will be able to order delicious home-cooked meals and ask for the food they want to be prepared. While Yedir will give its registered users the opportunity to become a cook, it will also provide opportunities for those who want to earn income by turning their home kitchen into a restaurant kitchen. The application, whose software was developed by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kaya Oğuz, Head of IUE Department of Computer Engineering, is expected to be put into use in January. The app is currently taking pre-registrations at ‘yedir.app’ address.
Bengisu Özpirinççi (32), graduate of Izmir University of Economics (IUE) Department of Architecture, established her own brand in Portugal, where she went for her doctorate, and became one of the favorite architects of the country by achieving many important projects at a young age. Özpirinççi, who went down in history as the first Turk to be registered with the Portuguese Chamber of Architects, successfully represented Turkey by taking part in many projects ranging from the reconstruction of historical buildings in Lisbon to large-scale housing projects. Özpirinççi, who continues her doctorate at the Department of Civil Engineering at Technical University of Lisbon while advancing in her career, aims to rapidly spread her success in Portugal to other European countries.
Erdem Batırbek and Keremcan Kırılmaz, designers from Izmir, ranked first in the Turkish Moon Bases National Idea Competition with their ‘living center in space’ design, which they created using their imagination and creativity. Erdem Batırbek, a graduate of Izmir University of Economics (IUE) Department of Industrial Design, and Keremcan Kırılmaz, a graduate of Izmir Institute of Technology (IYTE) Department of Architecture, received an award of 25,000 TL with the special designs they developed based on how a living center could be established in space in 2050.
