They produced ‘vegan leather’ from olive pulp

Olive, which is one of the values ​​unique to the Aegean and has been an indispensable element of tables for centuries as a source of healing and taste, has been a source of inspiration for designers. Melis Baloğlu and Elif Tekcan, who continue their careers as lecturers at Izmir University of Economics (IUE), from which they graduated, produced a bio-based material (vegan leather) from olive pulp called ‘PIRINA (pomace)’. The duo, who created a durable and environmentally friendly material that can be used especially in automotive and furniture upholstery, came first in the ‘Futuretex Istanbul’ competition organized by the Istanbul Textile and Raw Materials Exporters' Association (ITHIB), which prioritizes university-industry cooperation.

Esra-Melis Sarıhan sisters, graduates of Izmir University of Economics (IUE), developed an application called ‘Yedir’ that will bring home cooks and food lovers together with ‘one click’. People, who become a free member of the app, which can be used over the internet or by downloading it to their smartphones, will be able to order delicious home-cooked meals and ask for the food they want to be prepared. While Yedir will give its registered users the opportunity to become a cook, it will also provide opportunities for those who want to earn income by turning their home kitchen into a restaurant kitchen. The application, whose software was developed by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kaya Oğuz, Head of IUE Department of Computer Engineering, is expected to be put into use in January. The app is currently taking pre-registrations at ‘yedir.app’ address.

Özpirinççi, who went down in history as the first Turk to be registered with the Portuguese Chamber of Architects, successfully represented Turkey by taking part in many projects ranging from the reconstruction of historical buildings in Lisbon to large-scale housing projects. Özpirinççi, who continues her doctorate at the Department of Civil Engineering at Technical University of Lisbon while advancing in her career, aims to rapidly spread her success in Portugal to other European countries.

Erdem Batırbek and Keremcan Kırılmaz, designers from Izmir, ranked first in the Turkish Moon Bases National Idea Competition with their ‘living center in space’ design, which they created using their imagination and creativity. Erdem Batırbek, a graduate of Izmir University of Economics (IUE) Department of Industrial Design, and Keremcan Kırılmaz, a graduate of Izmir Institute of Technology (IYTE) Department of Architecture, received an award of 25,000 TL with the special designs they developed based on how a living center could be established in space in 2050.

The “Mentoring Project” (Student Mentor), which has been continuing for 7 years to accelerate the adaptation process of new students to the campus at Izmir University of Economics (IUE), did not slow down this year. 181 student mentors were selected among the young people of IUE studying in the second, third and fourth grades, within the scope of the project. Student mentors were paired with 2,427 young people who started education this year, 67 of which are foreign nationals. Stating that the project, which was initiated by the Alumni Relations Office for the first time in the Aegean Region, was taken as a role model by many universities in Turkey, Özge Kulaçoğlu, Coordinator of IUE Alumni Relations Office, said, “We have helped 12 thousand students since 2015 with our exemplary project that enables young people who have just started university to develop socially and increase their self-confidence.”

Serving as an occupational safety consultant in two major projects such as Göztepe Stadium and Narlıdere metro, Sarıtaş became the Aegean Region Officer of the Huawei brand in the field of occupational health and safety. Stating that he chose that major with the guidance of his father and that he understood that he made the right decision after graduation, Sarıtaş said, “I am currently working in a highly responsible position that affects the safety of more than 400 people in business life. I have to act in a focused and controlled manner, without making the slightest negligence. I love my job, keeping people safe makes me happy.”

Making a difference with her good English skills and effective communication with people, Arslan, who was selected among hundreds of people as a result of the 3-day interview in Istanbul, will settle in Doha, the capital of Qatar, and start working within a month. Arslan, who will fly to many parts of the world as a cabin crew, will successfully represent our country in this field.

Prof. Dr. Işık Özge Yumurtacı Hüseyinoğlu from Izmir University of Economics (IUE) Department of Logistics Management and her 3 students have developed a project that will guide companies that want to create a less costly and environmentally friendly supply chain. The study (students' graduation project), which reduces the carbon footprint and gives companies the opportunity to complete the supply chain in a shorter time with the method called ‘circular supply chain’, has been accepted to the UK-based ‘International Journal of Emerging Markets’. The project, which is one of the few studies entitled to be published worldwide at the end of a two-year evaluation process, will provide great advantages especially to logistics companies operating in the international arena.

Sedef Şen (28), a graduate of Izmir University of Economics (IUE) Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design, carried her passion for nature into design, and started to develop stylish lighting fixtures (sconces, lampshades, table lamps) using glass and brass. After completing her master's degree in Italy, Şen, who returned to Turkey and established her own brand and designed special products for interior spaces, represented our country in Milan Design Week (Isola Design District) with an object she prepared. Stating that she wants to expand her collection with the brand 'Senstudio' and wants to design remarkable works abroad as well as in our country, Şen said, “I will continue to produce functional and fun designs that excite people and reflect my own spirit.”

Larende, who managed to get accepted by 9 universities in England for master's degree, preferred the world-famous University of Sussex. Larende, who will receive a 1-year education in the field of ‘international business economics’ in England with a scholarship, said, “I reached my target point. Going to England is a very important opportunity for me. My aim is to successfully represent our country abroad by taking on senior positions in international companies.”

Living in Karşıyaka, Izmir, Elif Larende became interested in economics and mathematics at an early age with the influence of her parents, who are bankers. Having developed this interest further during her high school period and shaped her career goal in this direction, Larende enrolled in IUE Faculty of Business, Department of Economics in 2018 with a 50% scholarship.
