The “Mentoring Project” (Student Mentor), which has been continuing for 7 years to accelerate the adaptation process of new students to the campus at Izmir University of Economics (IUE), did not slow down this year. 181 student mentors were selected among the young people of IUE studying in the second, third and fourth grades, within the scope of the project. Student mentors were paired with 2,427 young people who started education this year, 67 of which are foreign nationals. Stating that the project, which was initiated by the Alumni Relations Office for the first time in the Aegean Region, was taken as a role model by many universities in Turkey, Özge Kulaçoğlu, Coordinator of IUE Alumni Relations Office, said, “We have helped 12 thousand students since 2015 with our exemplary project that enables young people who have just started university to develop socially and increase their self-confidence.”
Arda Sarıtaş, a graduate of Izmir University of Economics (IUE) Vocational School, Occupational Health and Safety Program, climbed the career ladder rapidly in 4 years, worked in important projects in Izmir, and was finally elected to a senior position in China's world-famous Huawei Company. Serving as an occupational safety consultant in two major projects such as Göztepe Stadium and Narlıdere metro, Sarıtaş became the Aegean Region Officer of the Huawei brand in the field of occupational health and safety. Stating that he chose that major with the guidance of his father and that he understood that he made the right decision after graduation, Sarıtaş said, “I am currently working in a highly responsible position that affects the safety of more than 400 people in business life. I have to act in a focused and controlled manner, without making the slightest negligence. I love my job, keeping people safe makes me happy.”
Yağmur Arslan (20), who graduated from Izmir University of Economics (IUE) Civil Aviation Cabin Services Program this year, got a job at Qatar Airways, the world-famous brand of the industry, as soon as she received her diploma. Making a difference with her good English skills and effective communication with people, Arslan, who was selected among hundreds of people as a result of the 3-day interview in Istanbul, will settle in Doha, the capital of Qatar, and start working within a month. Arslan, who will fly to many parts of the world as a cabin crew, will successfully represent our country in this field.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Işık Özge Yumurtacı Hüseyinoğlu from Izmir University of Economics (IUE) Department of Logistics Management and her 3 students have developed a project that will guide companies that want to create a less costly and environmentally friendly supply chain. The study (students' graduation project), which reduces the carbon footprint and gives companies the opportunity to complete the supply chain in a shorter time with the method called ‘circular supply chain’, has been accepted to the UK-based ‘International Journal of Emerging Markets’. The project, which is one of the few studies entitled to be published worldwide at the end of a two-year evaluation process, will provide great advantages especially to logistics companies operating in the international arena.
Sedef Şen (28), a graduate of Izmir University of Economics (IUE) Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design, carried her passion for nature into design, and started to develop stylish lighting fixtures (sconces, lampshades, table lamps) using glass and brass. After completing her master's degree in Italy, Şen, who returned to Turkey and established her own brand and designed special products for interior spaces, represented our country in Milan Design Week (Isola Design District) with an object she prepared. Stating that she wants to expand her collection with the brand 'Senstudio' and wants to design remarkable works abroad as well as in our country, Şen said, “I will continue to produce functional and fun designs that excite people and reflect my own spirit.”
Elif Larende (22), who graduated from Izmir University of Economics (IUE) Faculty of Business, Department of Economics with the second place this year, got on the radar of the Brits with her high grade point average and research. Larende, who managed to get accepted by 9 universities in England for master's degree, preferred the world-famous University of Sussex. Larende, who will receive a 1-year education in the field of ‘international business economics’ in England with a scholarship, said, “I reached my target point. Going to England is a very important opportunity for me. My aim is to successfully represent our country abroad by taking on senior positions in international companies.”
Living in Karşıyaka, Izmir, Elif Larende became interested in economics and mathematics at an early age with the influence of her parents, who are bankers. Having developed this interest further during her high school period and shaped her career goal in this direction, Larende enrolled in IUE Faculty of Business, Department of Economics in 2018 with a 50% scholarship.
Aslı Melike Soylu, who graduated from Izmir University of Economics (IUE) Department of English Translation and Interpretation this year, came first in the Young Translators Contest organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Directorate for European Union Affairs. Soylu brought the first prize to Izmir in the English category, in which a total of 54 students from 24 universities competed.
The Young Translators Contest, which has been held since 2010 for senior students studying in the departments of translation and interpretation, and translation studies, was organized in English, German and French. A total of 85 students from 24 universities participated in the competition, 54 in English, 16 in German and 15 in French languages.
Final-year students of Izmir University of Economics (IUE) Faculty of Fine Arts and Design completed their educational journey with the horizon themed ‘Graduation Exhibition and Fashion Show’. The exhibition, which featured the projects of students who graduated from 4 departments this year, attracted great attention, and the special collection consisting of 40 works prepared by 6 students who graduated from the Department of Textile and Fashion Design received full marks from the fashion show audience.
The intelligent decision support system (IDSS) named ‘LTLZone’, which was developed by a team of 3 people at Izmir University of Economics (IUE), with the aim of enabling logistics companies to provide higher quality services at low cost, received a double award. LTLZone, which came to life as a result of nearly 3 years of work, became the only project that received an award in the ‘corporate’ category at the Logistics Association (LODER) 11th National Logistics Project Competition. LTLZone received the best practice award in the field of information systems in logistics at the ‘Logistics Awards 2022’ organized in cooperation with Dokuz Eylül University Maritime Faculty and Aegean Logistics Association (ELODER). LTLZone, prepared by Prof. Dr. Özgür Özpeynirci, Head of IUE Department of Logistics Management, Asst. Prof. Dr. Sinem Tokcaer, and 2021 graduate of the department, Deniz Karvan, provides companies with many advantages.
Iranian Mary Kahshan Zamani (24) turned her dream of becoming a fashion designer, which started as a child, into reality in Izmir, where she came to study at university. After graduating from Izmir University of Economics (IUE) Department of Textile and Fashion Design, Zamani, who built the 'Kahshan' brand, made a difference with the unique designs she created. Young fashion designer, who sells her designs all over Turkey by selling on a famous e-commerce site as well as her own website, said, “It has been 8 months since I built my brand. I think that I have made rapid progress in a short time and that consumers like my products. My biggest advantage is doing what I love and want. I will continue to work to be even more successful.”
