Assoc. Prof. Dr. Işık Özge Yumurtacı Hüseyinoğlu from Izmir University of Economics (IUE) Department of Logistics Management and her 3 students have developed a project that will guide companies that want to create a less costly and environmentally friendly supply chain. The study (students' graduation project), which reduces the carbon footprint and gives companies the opportunity to complete the supply chain in a shorter time with the method called ‘circular supply chain’, has been accepted to the UK-based ‘International Journal of Emerging Markets’. The project, which is one of the few studies entitled to be published worldwide at the end of a two-year evaluation process, will provide great advantages especially to logistics companies operating in the international arena.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Işık Özge Yumurtacı Hüseyinoğlu from IUE Department of Logistics Management and graduates Deniz Kurtay, İrem Aşar ve Serra Dilmaç from the same department, conducted an observation on a famous white goods company that has a production factory in Manisa as part of their graduation project. The study focused on many details such as how the company supplies the products it needs for production, which transportation method and route it uses.
IT WILL GUIDE THE COMPANIES
Sharing the details of the study, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hüseyinoğlu pointed out that a more environmentally friendly and less costly supply process is possible for companies. Stating that the study she conducted with her students focused on a single company, however, that the solutions they offer can be implemented by many companies, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hüseyinoğlu said, “There are many technical details in the project we have prepared. However, there are simple solutions to some issues. There are habits that need to be changed at the point of supplying the necessary materials for production. For example, each of the 6 trucks goes to different points at the same time to get the necessary materials. However, with the right planning and loading, it is possible for only 1-2 trucks to go around all the suppliers. This is much more environmentally friendly and economical. This example seems simple, but many companies fail at the point of planning them. Although the sea route is much more economical and shorter in time, the land route is mostly preferred as a result of habit. We made suggestions to guide many companies on such issues.”
IT WILL SET AN EXAMPLE ABROAD
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hüseyinoğlu continued as follows: “Effective and efficient delivery of goods, and transportation of raw materials from suppliers are very important for a supply chain where carbon footprints are reduced and costs are reduced. Companies should focus on these issues. We are happy and proud that our study will be published in an international journal. Thus, our study will reach academics and students from various universities abroad and can be used in lectures. The University has implemented Campus Izmir, the first model of university-city integration in Turkey. The biggest aim of this model was to focus on the issues that the sectors are looking for solutions and to help them. The project we have prepared fits perfectly with this vision of the University. This project has become one of the few studies that have been entitled to be published internationally, among the projects developed in our school with the cooperation of university-industry. We have developed a very successful project with our students. This project will take a very valuable place in the future plans of my students.”
WE OFFER DIFFERENT SOLUTIONS
Deniz Kurtay, İrem Aşar, and Serra Dilmaç, Graduates of IUE Department of Logistics Management, said, “Thanks to the logistics system we designed, vehicles circulate less between manufacturers and loading areas are used more effectively. Thus, less carbon emissions are made. Less circulation also cuts costs. We worked hard for our project. While conducting the project, we used many databases and collected data from the field. We have transformed the data we have obtained into a design that can offer more than one solution by making it meaningful and simple. We all worked devotedly under the leadership of our professor Işık. We have achieved an important success for our university and ourselves on an international platform.”
