Mert Atanmış (23), who graduated from Izmir University of Economics (IUE) Department of Industrial Engineering with the first place last year, was entitled to receive the ‘GREAT’ scholarship awarded to only 200 students by the British government. Atanmış, who will do a master's degree in the field of ‘artificial intelligence and data analytics’ at University of Bradford, one of the well-established educational institutions of England, will have the opportunity to develop himself abroad and produce projects in the international arena. Stating that he aims to return to Turkey after his education in England and continue his career in the field of artificial intelligence, Atanmış said, “I want to serve my country in the best way and to accomplish exemplary projects in my field.”
The GREAT scholarship, awarded to Mert Atanmış, a 2022 graduate of IUE Department of Industrial Engineering, provides students from different countries with the opportunity to receive postgraduate education at UK universities. Tens of thousands of students applying are examined in detail in many criteria such as their success in their courses, future goals and reference letters.
HE WILL STAY FOR A YEAR
This year, 200 students from 14 countries who were eligible for the GREAT scholarship had the chance to pursue a master's degree at 49 universities in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. IUE Graduate Mert Atanmış will go to England in September as one of the few students to receive a scholarship worth 10 thousand pounds and will study at University of Bradford for a year.
I STARTED TO WORK 4 MONTHS BEFORE I GRADUATED
Expressing he was excited and proud to go to England, Atanmış said, “I attended my lessons regularly during my university years. I studied within a certain plan. While I was studying, I also communicated with the sectors I intend to work in. I established a business network by taking part in companies as a volunteer intern. Thanks to these, I graduated from my department with the first place and got a job as an ‘implementation consultant’ at ICRON 4 months before I graduated. Artificial intelligence is an area that can become the center of our lives day by day and that I am very interested in. I wanted very much to go abroad to receive training on this subject and to establish a milieu at the same time. The scholarship I got from the UK will be a great opportunity for me to do all this.”
I WILL RETURN TO MY COUNTRY
Expressing that he aims to continue his career in Turkey, Atanmış said, “After studying in England, I aim to return to Turkey and continue my career in my country. I have no thoughts of staying abroad. Artificial intelligence is a field that is constantly changing and developing, where you have a wide range of things to do. I want to advance myself in this field and to accomplish exemplary projects. It would be great for me to do all this in my own country, in this land where I was educated, born and raised.”
TRUST YOURSELF AND FIGHT FOR IT
Atanmış continued as follows: “I would like to thank my university for all the support it has given me and the quality education it has provided. If I did it, many of my friends who are currently studying at university could do better. My advice to fellow students is to go after their goals, ask for them and not doubt that they will succeed. I understood that when you only trust and believe in yourself, when you work hard, when you struggle to deserve it, no difficulties can stand in your way.”
