Selen Çabuk, Deniz Taplu and Ece Deniz Ergenç, graduates of Izmir University of Economics (IUE) Department of Sociology, took their achievements to the international arena and received acceptance from 3 different countries for their graduate education. Young people from Izmir University of Economics, who will go to Germany, Ireland and Hungary to study at the world's leading universities, aim to represent our country in the best way by accomplishing successful works that make a difference in their fields.
Selen Çabuk, a graduate of IUE Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Department of Sociology, will study ‘criminology’ at Technological University Dublin in Ireland in September. Çabuk, who will stay in Ireland for 1 year, will scientifically examine the impact of psychological factors on people's criminal behavior. Deniz Taplu, who is also doing a minor in IUE Department of Psychology, will pursue a master's degree in ‘cyber psychology’ at the Berlin School of Business and Innovation in Germany. Taplu will focus on the impact of technological interaction on human behavior.
STUDIES ON MINORITIES AND MIGRATION
Ece Deniz Ergenç from Izmir University of Economics will study at Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE) in Hungary, one of the oldest higher education institutions in Europe. Ergenç, who was awarded a scholarship by the Hungarian state and Tempus Public Foundation, will complete her master's degree in ‘minority and migration studies’. Ergenç will study to develop solutions at the international level on current issues that concern the whole world.
CONTRIBUTION TO POLICY-MAKING PROCESS
Stating that she wants to continue her career in the academic field, Ergenç said, “After my undergraduate education, I wanted to develop myself especially in the field of minorities and migration and conduct scientific studies in this field. I aim to understand the dynamics and layers of current issues the world is facing and to take part in the process of producing the necessary policies. I will be in a multicultural environment in Hungary. I am very excited about the different perspectives this will provide me. I want to have a successful master's degree and continue my doctoral studies in Europe.”
AN IMPORTANT STAGE
Stating that she was accepted to Ireland as a result of a very sensitive and thorough examination, Selen Çabuk said, “Criminology is a field that has not been offered much for graduate education in our country yet. We can say that individual attitudes and psychological factors affect people's tendency to commit crimes. I wanted to study this topic and research the policies of countries such as Norway and Finland. I aim to offer solutions on what countries can do to prevent personal crimes. Studying in Ireland is an important step for my future. I want to make the most of it.”
PSYCHOLOGICAL AND SOCIAL ANALYSIS
Noting that technological interaction has increased recently and this situation has also affected human behavior, Deniz Taplu said, “We are in a period when technology is developing and digitalization has become indispensable in our lives. Cyber psychology is a field that concerns us all. In addition to the impact of technology on human behavior, information ethics is a completely different subject that needs to be focused on. We are in a period where technological interaction is changing even the cultural characteristics of different segments of society. Since I studied psychology as well as sociology at my university, I will be able to examine these issues both socially and personally. I believe that my master's study in Berlin will contribute lot to me. Studying abroad was one of my main goals. I am happy to have achieved it.”
