Alp Buğra Nazar and Yağmur Sarıdede, graduates of Izmir Department of Architecture, University of Economics (IUE), came in first place in the Sarayönü Kızılay Square Urban Design Ideas Competition held in Şanlıurfa. Nazar and Sarıdede, who prepared environmentally friendly designs suitable for the historical texture of the region for Kızılay Square, which was demolished and cleared of concrete by Şanlıurfa Municipality, came in first place among 67 ambitious projects.
Alp Buğra Nazar (26) and Yağmur Sarıdede (26), who graduated from IUE Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, Department of Architecture in 2020, completed their designs for Sarayönü Kızılay Square, one of the historical points of Şanlıurfa, in about 1 month. Seeing that 'courtyard' is actively used in many buildings in the region, the duo used this in their designs.
COMMERCIAL AND SOCIAL LIFE
Nazar and Sarıdede, who designed the square as a commercial and social living space, also created sections with large courtyards in the middle of the square. Mayor Zeynel Abidin Beyazgül of Şanlıurfa Metropolitan Municipality presented the award to the IUE team, who came in first place with designs that reflect the culture of the region and add dynamism to the city. Nazar, who was deemed worthy of an award in the competition organized by the Izmir Freelance Architects Association with her project called 'Urban Implant' for Bornova last year, was once again awarded with the project she developed for a different region.
SUITABLE FOR ALL SEASONS
Nazar and Sarıdede, who stated that many experienced teams from all over Turkey prepared special projects for the competition, expressed that they were proud to be deemed worthy of the award. Nazar and Sarıdede said, “There are many open or closed courtyards in the middle and side parts of the building in Şanlıurfa. Courtyard culture is very common especially in inns and houses. We can say that the courtyard is the traditional architectural element of Şanlıurfa. We created the designs with this in mind. We interpreted the traditional courtyard culture and other landscape elements together. We designed the square to be used in all seasons by taking the seasonal conditions into consideration. Our design, which allows people of all ages and from all walks of life to spend their time comfortably, won the admiration of the jury and came in first place. We are proud and happy to have such a valuable award.”
