Nebahat Mine Tunca, graduate of Izmir University of Economics, Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, Department of Architecture (2013) won the Serra Special Award at Archiprix Competition for her “han” project which reflects the light and shadow effects of Basmane region. This award qualified Tunca to attend an architectural trip in Holland. Tunca, who got inspired by the light effects between the historical and unique alleys of Basmane to create her “han” project, established an access route between Basmane Train Station and Historical Kemeraltı Bazaar by this way.
Tunca, who came back with an award from the prestigious competition where 124 projects from 30 countries participated, said, “Basmane region has a special place in Izmir. The historical Agora excavation zone is also in this region. The region acts as a transition area that connects Konak Kemeraltı Bazaar to Alsancak. With this project, I aimed to conserve the historic fabric and to contribute to future touristic values. My project involves a han”.
A brand new “Basmane” from a young architect
Tunca stated that when walking through the alleys of Basmane, one can find themselves in an open space all of a sudden or the exact opposite. She said that light and shadow were not very illuminating in the area; therefore she added light and shadow effects to her project. Tunca stated the following:
“Han project involves handicrafts unique to Basmane and some artisanship. There aren’t many numbers of shops. There are workshops where people can come and experience these crafts, where they can get training to relay them to future generations. There are also cafes and recreation areas, exhibition areas where tourists can spend time. The project acts as a passage that can take a person from the train station in Basmane and direct them to Kemeraltı.”
