The 'Mentoring Project' that Izmir University of Economics (IUE) has been continuing for 6 years to speed up the adaptation process of new students to the campus did not slow down this year as well. 130 mentors were selected among the third- and fourth-year students studying at IUE within the scope of the project, which also contributes greatly to the social development of the students. Mentor students were matched with 1,750 young people who started education this year, 73 of whom are foreign national. The students initially started the meeting on the online platform due to the pandemic.
In the project, which will continue until the end of the first semester, mentors will introduce their departments to the young people who have just started university and will give detailed information about the opportunities on the campus. Mentors, who will also ensure that students are social by participating in activities through social clubs, will always be in contact with them through the WhatsApp group they have established.
323 APPLICATIONS WERE EVALUATED
Özge Kulaçoğlu, IUE Alumni Relations Office Coordinator, stated that they attach great importance to the project and that the mentors were determined as a result of detailed interviews. Kulaçoğlu said, “We started our project for the first time in 2015. This year, we made it much more comprehensive. Considering that young people were also away from social life due to a long pandemic process, our project becomes even more meaningful. We work to ensure that students develop themselves and benefit from all the opportunities of the University. Of course, their satisfaction also makes us happy. We started collecting applications for mentor students in June. We selected 130 students through interviews among 323 applications.”
STUDENTS ARE ALWAYS OUR PRIORITY
Stating that they attach great importance to the demands and opinions of students who have just started school, Kulaçoğlu continued as follows: “Doing projects to meet the needs of students is always our priority as a university. The adaptation process of a new student to the campus may not be easy sometimes. Students who have been through similar situations will best describe the process of adaptation to the campus and the extensive opportunities our university provides to young people. Based on this idea, we included students who are studying at our university in our project. The positive feedback we receive also reveals the success of the project. We will continue to do special projects in the coming period by acting together with the students.”
