Insomnia may lead to many medical conditions such as headaches, acid reflux, diabetes, coronary diseases, depression, etc. The “Smart Sleep Monitor”, developed by ARTSYS, company within Izmir Sciencepark of Izmir University of Economics (IUE), helps keeping temperature, sound, and light under control, factors that influence sleep pattern. The sensors that are attached to the bed during sleep are transmitted to smart phones via Wi-Fi. This way, external factors that influence sleep are identified, and minimized.
Burak Çiçeksoy, Graduate of IUE Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, who participated in the development of smart sleep monitor system, reported that he measures the temperature, sound, and light, factors that influence sleep pattern, and he stated the following:
“Most healthy adults need between 7 to 9 hours of sleep per night to function at their best. Physical conditions of the environment where sleeping takes place influence the sleep efficiency. When you are deprived of sleep, you have to deal with confusion, fatigue, tension, and attention deficit. Our system measures the quality of sleep based on external factors such as temperature, sound, and light. The card in the system, which does the measuring, has Wi-Fi and connects to the internet at home. After the data is processed, it is transferred to the database, allowing individuals to review these daily, and monitor the changes in their sleep quality. Data on temperature, sound, and light are sent to the phone instantly. So you can see your sleep pattern as a table on your phone. This helps people take necessary precautions regarding the external factors that influence their sleep they were once not aware of.”
Çiçeksoy also stated that heart rhythms were also being measured via a sensor attached to the bed, and a speaker in the system was used as an alarm clock as well.
